Victor runs his training yard as a family organization.

Gerald Dartnall – Assistant Trainer

Gerald has a lifetimes experience of racehorses and is without a shadow of a doubt a great horseman.

As a professional jockey for 12 seasons and an amateur for 5 seasons, Gerald had his first ride in 1962, his first professional ride in 1967 and his last ride in 1978.

Gerald is senior work rider and is invaluable in the development and bringing on of the young horses, as well as playing a key role in the working and schooling of all the horses in training.

Katie Friend – Head Girl

Katie came to Higher Shutscombe after working at Weathercock House for Mrs Jenny Pitman.

Katie has been with the Dartnall’s now for nearly 10 years and is a very valuable member of staff.

As well as being responsible for the day to day running of the yard and all that entails, Katie is a brilliant horsewoman and as a senior work rider her work with the young and difficult horses is remarkable.

Paddy Dartnall – Travelling Head Lad

Paddy has recently returned to Higher Shutscombe having spent a spell with Noel Chance in Lambourn.

As well as assisting Victor, Paddy is responsible for all travelling to the races and orders all stock for the yard, (which is no mean feat).

Paddy is one of the yards senior work riders and excels in settling and relaxing horses that pull too hard.

James White – Conditional Jockey

James has proved himself to be an asset to the yard, having ridden 29 winners for us since being appointed the yard Conditional.

James rode the biggest winner of his career so far, in December, when he partnered Lord Sam to victory at Wincanton.

James plays a vital role in the schooling and working of all the horses.

He works as part of the team at Higher Shutscombe and we look forward to his partnering many more of our horses into the winners enclosure.
