Victor's Diary... click here for Victor's latest thoughts

Victor has had a lifetime's experience with racehorses, coming from a racing family with his Father being Desmond Dartnall, himself a professional jockey and licenced trainer. As a younger man Victor had a successful career as an amateur jockey and later in life went on to be a leading Point to Point trainer for many seasons and Champion Hunter Chase trainer in one particular season.

Since taking out a professional training licence in 1998, Victor has achieved an impressive and consistent win to run strike rate. For the 2005 season his strike rate was 21% overall (20% in Hurdle races, 24% in Chases and 20% in National Hunt Bumpers). Compare this to the 23% strike rate (26% Hurdles, 20% Chases, 20% in National Hunt Bumpers) of the champion trainer for 2005 and you will get some indication of how successful Victor Dartnall's training establishment really is.

Victor has a patient ethos, giving young horses time to mature and grow, if required. This investment in his horses future has paid dividends, with individuals such as Karanja, Lord Sam, Mount Clerigo, Here’s Johnny and many others. He also has an excellent record of successfully bringing horses back from injury and dramatically improving horses that have bled or have had wind problems, (e.g.: Borehill Joker who last season won 4 of his 8 starts, only being out of the winners enclosure once during this time).

Victor has also achieved a reputation of producing highly regarded Bumper horses, with Lord Sam, Mount Clerigo and Karanja being rated as the some of the top class horses in country.

Victor has a hands on personal approach to training and can be seen, come rain or shine, on the gallops every morning. He takes an active role in the day to day running of the yard and can be found checking legs or feeding. He knows every detail of the well being of each horse entrusted to his care, as well as having a detailed knowledge of their form, background and breeding.

Each animal in training at Higher Shutscombe Farm is treated as an individual and Victor and his team endeavor to provide whatever that individual requires to produce it’s best performance on the racecourse.

Victor's current training fees are £220 per week.
